Ultimate Runner Competition
The Ultimate Runner Competition is an age graded and gender graded competition consisting of the following 4 events. All events are run separately but on the same night. At the end of the night, the man and woman with the highest age-graded score are crowned Ultimate Runners!
400 meters
800 meters
1-mile
5K through Mine Falls Park finishing on the track
Results are age and gender graded by calculating the competitor’s age standard as a percentage of the competitor's time for each event.
The highest average percentage over the 4 events determines the Ultimate Runner
For example, if the age 50 standard for 400 meters is 51 seconds...
Time of 80 seconds by a 50 year old achieves a percentage of 63.75% (51/80 = .6375)
Time of 70 seconds by a 50 year old achieves a percentage of 72.86% (51/70 = .7286)
Similar calculations are performed for the other 3 events and averaged over the four events. The highest average determines the Ultimate Runner.
You can sign-up for the Ultimate Runner at track on Wednesday evenings. There is no entry fee. Ultimate Runner is only open to Gate City Strider members.
2022
Congratulations to all Ultimate Runner finishers who battled extra hot and humid conditions.
Rebecca Kadish was the overall winner while Jim Hansen was top men's finisher. Thanks to volunteers Silvana Morgan, Stephen Rouleau , Richie Blake , and David Salvas.
The event was held on Wednesday July 20th on a sunny and hot evening, around 92 or 93 degrees and high humidity. Here are some pictures from the event and the overall summary!
2021
Congratulations to all Ultimate Runner finishers who battled hot and humid conditions. Jacob Warmold regained his Ultimate Runner Champion title followed by Rick Roy in second place with Sam Harris finishing 3rd in an all male field. Thanks to volunteers David Salvas, Oliver McMahon, Richie Blake, Amanda McCann, Beth Whipple, Keith O'Brien and Stephen Rouleau. The event was held on Wednesday August 25th on a sunny and hot evening, around 88 degrees. Here are some pictures from the event, including the balloon that a bystander was flying in the field of Nashua High North.
2019

Our now classic mid-summer club competition at Mines Falls will feature the “Ultimate Runners” testing themselves against the clock and the best runners in each one-year age group in America!
On July 25, our Wednesday night workout will consist of four events – starting with the One Mile Run, and then the 800, 400, (all on the track) and 5K (5000 meters in Mines Falls) in that order! YES, all the same evening! All events will be run in heats with runners of comparable speed (regardless of age and sex) except for the 5 K where all runners will start at the same time! Water will be provided, but runners are also urged to bring their own!
Each runner will be scored against the fastest run by a person of the same age, and that score will be a percentile with 100 as the “perfect” score. In last year’s competition 12 women competed and the top five were: Heidi McGaffigan (74.53), Pam Hall (70.78). Aline Kenney (70.78), Yuki Minami (63.10), and Peg LaBrosse (59.43). In the men’s competition, 32 runners completed all four events, and the leaders were: Rich Stockdale (77.58), Brian Bigelow (75.26), Warren Church (75.26), Tom Kolb (92.93), Jim Belanger (72.15), and Jim Hansen (71.29).
The highest individual event scores were: Rich Stockdale (81.35) and Heidi McGaffigan (77.72) in the 5K; Damion Rowe (79.97, Warren Church (97.36) and Aline Kenney (71.48) in the 4000; Rich Stockdale (76.70) and Heidi McGaffigan (74.79) in the 800; and Rich Stockdale (80.06) and Heidi McGaffigan (77.50) in the one mile!
Our thanks go to Steve Moland for coordinating the now computerized scoring, and Dave Williams for organizing the annual event. Coach Dave Camire encourages all runners to use this workout as your speed test for mid-summer, comparing your fitness level against the previous years. Steve has asked for three or four persons who will not be competing to help with the scoring.
Three requests of all runners:
(1) Please sign up in advance one of the two previous Wednesday nights, or send Dave Williams an e-mail message at revdcwms@metrocast.net giving your name, sex, age, and estimated one mile time in this event!
(2) Be prepared to note your own finish time from your own watch, or from the digital display clock at the finish, and report that time at the scoring desk immediate after each run.
(3) The fastest milers will start at promptly 6 a.m. and runners in the successive heats are asked to be ready at the starting line as the previous heat concludes.
Steve promises that the computerized results will available very shortly after the last event, and that runners can wait briefly for them that evening, or check the website by morning for all the gory details! They will also be in the next edition of the newsletter!
Word has it that Jane Levesque and Jack Kick; traditional top scorers in earlier years (but absent last year) are gunning to recover their well-deserved top positions. Look out Warren and Heidi!

66 year young Jack Kick of Dunstable ran away from the pack in the 1999 Ultimate Runner. Jack's 79.31 score put him almost 4 full points ahead of runner-up Brian Bigelow of Nashua. Each runners score represents the percentage of all runners of their age in the USA that they beat in this country-wide athletic contest.
New Strider Alice Freid of Nashua raced to a 1 1/2 point victory over Diane Quinlan of Merrimack. Alice and Diane were followed by Heidi McGaffigan of Milford.
The Ultimate Runner challenges runners to a 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, mile, and 5K all on the same night. Each runner;'s time is compared against the times of every other runner of the same age nationwide. A score of 50 would be middle-of-the-pack.
