SCHOLARSHIP – DEADLINE IS THIS SUNDAY!

The Gate City Striders are accepting applications scholarships! This scholarship is open to high school or college students who will be attending a post-secondary educational institution, including a college, university or vocational school in the fall of 2022. Any GCS member, child of a GCS member, or a student sponsored by a GCS member is eligible. Read all the details and download an application from https://gatecity.org/gate-city-strider-scholarship/. GATE CITY RUNNING FESTIVAL – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Registration for the 2022 Gate City Running Festival is now open! This year we’re bringing a fast 1 mile race down the Broad St Parkway, a 10k and a half marathon. YOUTH TRACK AND FIELD

Johanna Newbould is spear heading bringing back this program. She’s in need of volunteers and coaches to help out on Mondays and Thursdays in May thru June. Contact her for more details!

YOGA/CORE NIGHTS

We’re very excited to announce that we will be having a group yoga / core strength work following our track workouts starting in mid-late May. All included as part of your membership! Come have a strong workout on the track and get a solid stretch and core workout to finish up!

PARKERS RUN

May 7th we’ll return to Parker’s Maple Barn out in Mason, NH for a group run followed by breakfast! Meet at 8am sharp in the parking lot across the street. We’ll split into some groups and run after we put our name in. Finishing with everyone eating together afterwards. Contact John Lewicke for more info

OUTDOOR TRACK / OPENING LAP – NEXT WEEK!

Join us Wednesday April 20th at the Nashua North Track for the start of our outdoor track season! Following the workout, we will have pizza and non-alcholic beverages available. We will reschedule in the event of rain. We’re currently at the Nashua North track due to the condition of the South track. It is supposed to be under construction this summer. We’ll be back at South as soon as that’s complete!

The first race in our New Hampshire Grand Prix title defense is fast approaching. The first race is in our backyards at the Nashua Soup Kitchen 10k on April 3rd! Gate City has won the New Hampshire Grand Prix title the last few years because we’ve had a full team participation. Even if you think you are too slow, you WILL score points. Join fellow Gate City Striders for a group run on the Nashua Soup Kitchen 5K/10K course. Meet next to the Muldoon Fitness Center on the Rivier University Campus Saturday March 26th.Please arrive at 8:45am. Run will start at 9:00amThis is a great chance to prepare for the 1st race in the NHGP series or simply connect with other striders.Pace group leaders will be available to help you follow the route. Looking for a track workout on Tuesday or Wednesday nights? There is still plenty of room for you to join the crew kicking butt and taking names at the Hampshire Hills dome. Tuesday nights feature a 5k/10k and marathon workout, while Wednesday nights are more C25K focused. Warmup starts at 6pm, announcements at 615 workout starts just afterwards. $75 for the rest of the season or $10 cash or check drop in. It’s not too early to give a quick reminder on race reimbursement. The Gate City Striders have a very generous program reimbursing our runners based on the number of races in a particular series they run and meeting a volunteering requirement. Many volunteering opportunities are coming up soon. Plus Fitness University and Summer Trail Series still to come. Please sign up soon!Mill Cities Relay is coming soon, and WE NEED YOU to help us reclaim the title after a narrow defeat in 2019 from the Greater Lowell Road Runners.It is time to start putting together teams for this year’s Mill Cities Relay – taking place on Sunday, Dec 5th. MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! 2019 was our clubs first loss in 12 years, and we need your help to get back on top!!! Our club wins because of the participation of everyone!For those who are new to the club, The Mill Cities Relay is a 5-leg, 27ish mile race from Nashua, NH to Lawrence, MA. It is an epic event! The relay race began 37 years ago (in 1984) as a way of celebrating the end of the local road racing season and it determines bragging rights among the 22 participating Merrimack Valley running clubs. The race starts not with a starting gun, but with the drop of a ceremonial Mill City brick. The five leg distances are 5.6, 4.7, 2.5, 9.4 & 4.7 miles and points are awarded to teams in 18 age/gender categories. Teams finishing in the top 3 in their division get a brick trophy with a small plaque on it.Any current club member is eligible to participate in this year’s race – free of charge! We hope to put on a premier event but are really short volunteers for Saturday for course set up and clearing as well as Sunday for various areas. GCS SCHOLARSHIP
Congrats to this year’s winner, Carly Matthews! A long-time strider, she is currently working towards her Masters’s in Chemistry at UMass Lowell! Congrats! Good luck to all the HS seniors as they start their final high school year. As many might be pursuing secondary education, we wanted to make sure they, or their parents, are aware of the GCS scholarship.The Gate City Striders (GCS) running club offers a scholarship to a high school or college student who is a member of GCS, whose parents are members of GCS, or who is sponsored by a GCS member.

Track is continuing for the next few Wednesdays. 6pm at Nashua North High School

CANDLELIGHT RELAY
Wednesday October 20th It wouldn’t be the end of track workouts without the candlelight relay and bell lap celebration! Join us for this mile relay (4×400 – with randomly selected teams). Pizza and beverages provided post relay for our Bell Lap Celebration – so bring a chair and plan to hang out after!

VIRTUAL BOSTON
Johanna Lisle Newbold is currently hard at work setting up a cheer and aid station along the Nashua River Rail Trail on Saturday October 9th. Stay tuned for more info. Contact her directly if you’re interested in volunteering.
